Tires keep you safe and comfortable on the road, but they don’t last forever. So how do you know when it’s time for new tires from the SUV dealer? Let’s roll through the signs.

Tell-Tale Tread Wear

The most obvious indication that you need a new set of tires is the amount of wear on the treads. The minimum legal tread depth is 2/32 of an inch. A simple way to check your tread depth is with something called the penny test. Stick a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln upside-down. If you can see the top of Honest Abe’s head, it’s time for fresh tires.

Unevenly Worn Tread

Check if the tread has worn evenly across the tire’s surface. Are there bald spots, or areas that are more worn than the others? Uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension, or balance issues. If you notice uneven wear on your tires, you may need to get them replaced. Rotating your tires regularly can reduce this issue in the future, but it can’t undo the damage to your tires.

Bulges and Blisters

Inspect the sidewalls of your tires for any bulges, blisters, or other irregularities. Over time, the surface of your tires can weaken, leading to bumps, bulges, or blisters that protrude from their surface. If you notice any lumps or bumps on the sidewall of your tires, you need to replace them right away for safety. These weak spots can cause sudden tire failure and may lead to blowouts.

Cracks in the Sidewall

Visible cracking in the sidewall can be a sign of tire aging or damage. If you spot any cracks, cuts, or distinct grooves in your tire’s sidewalls, it’s safest to replace the tires. Cracks can lead to leaks or, worse, tire failure.

Old tires

Tire age, even if they’re not being used, and over time, the rubber begins to deteriorate. Check the tire’s manufacturing date. You can find this on the sidewall, indicated by a four-digit number. The first two digits represent the week, and the last two the year of manufacture. It’s generally recommended to replace tires every six years, regardless of their visible condition. If your tires are approaching this age, consider getting new ones.
